In this research project, the objective is to support the decarbonization of freight transport through a collaborative modal split solution. De Moor et al. (2023) highlight the synergy between modal split transport and collaborative shipping for achieving the modal shift. Collaborative shipping can create the scale (and demand stability) required to make rail transport economically viable, while complementing rail transport with road transport enables flexibility in the transport operations. As such, our proposed solution aims to overcome the inflexibility and constraints inherent to rail transport. The main focus of the
project is on the combination of road and rail transport.
