Harvey Miller & Andreu Ulied on the « Two-Speed » World

Founded in 2002 by Elon Musk, SpaceX envisions a day when rocket transportation becomes a possibility, a never before imagined possibility whereby you can go anywhere on Earth in under an hour. Advertisements for SpaceX promote trips from New York City to Shanghai to last only 39 minutes. SpaceX proposes to be introduced to the public before the end of the decade.
In perhaps stark contrast, the COVID-19 crisis has led to the popularization of the 15-minute city. In order to prevent the spread of the virus via public transportation, alternative mobility solutions were quickly put in place. Cities around the world have shown interest in adopting new modes of public transportation and rethinking mobility by deploying hundreds of kilometres of bike lanes, expanding restaurant terraces in spaces reserved for parking, and rolling out green initiatives in neighbourhoods.
As a response to this “two-speed” world, REBALANCE will host a discussion conducted by Andreu Ulied featuring Alain L’Hostis and Harvey Miller. Alain L’Hostis is Research Director at Univ Gustave Eiffel : his reseach focuses on geographical distances and spatial planning. Harvey Miller is a professor of Geographic Information Science at Ohio State University and an expert on social dimensions of transportation, the implications of human mobility, accessibility for sustainable transportation, livable communities and public health.
As experts in the fields of geography, mobility, urban planning, and transportation, they will speak about the confrontation of high and low speeds that generates a deformation of the terrestrial surface into a complex geometry where space has turned into a series of “time-space needles”. The discussion will take us to a series of considerations on the nature and properties of terrestrial time-space, revisiting the concepts of geography, speed, slowness, space and time.
